Policy on animals in medical research
The Migraine Trust is the UK’s leading migraine charity and has been funding medical research since its inception in 1965. This research has led to major advances in treatment, benefiting millions of people.
We understand that using animals in medical research is a very sensitive area. We are also committed to finding new treatments and furthering understanding to reduce the suffering of migraine, regarded as one of the most disabling conditions in the world.
We do not take the decision to fund animal research lightly and applications for research funding where the use of animals is deemed essential are considered extremely carefully.
We are a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and support their statement on ‘the use of animals in research’. This includes a commitment to the ‘3R’s:
- Replace where possible the use of animals with other lab techniques
- Refine the use of animals to minimise their suffering
- Reduce the number of animals used to the minimum
- Find out more about the 3Rs
You can find more information on this, and about why research involving animals is still necessary on the AMRC website.
