What your brother or sister with migraine is going through

How you can help them

Remember to make sure you are okay too

It isn’t easy to see your brother or sister struggle with migraine.

It can be very hard to see them in pain when they are having a migraine.

It can be hard to understand what they can and can’t do to try and stop themselves having a migraine in the first place. Some children with migraine have to stay inside when it’s very sunny and others have to stop doing some of the sports they love.

How you feel

Your feelings about this are okay.

This could be feeling sad, tired, or annoyed.

They are your brother or sister, and you love them.

So it’s hard to see them go through this. Your feelings about this are normal.

What you can do to help

First of all, make sure you are okay.

There are people you can go to if you want to talk about how you are feeling.

This could be your mum, dad, carer, a teacher, or whoever you would like to talk to about how you are feeling.

Then you could find out how to help your brother or sister who has migraine.

You could:

  • Ask them if there is anything you can do to help them when they are having a migraine. This could be helping to find them somewhere to sit or lie down. Or it could be telling an adult that they are having a migraine.
  • Ask them if there is anything you can do to help them when they are having a migraine. This could be helping to find them somewhere to sit or lie down. Or it could be telling an adult that they are having a migraine.
  • Talk to your mum, dad or carer, about what you can do to help.
  • You could also help them tell other people about their migraine. Here are some ways that you can talk to people about migraine (link to page).

You can also tell them about how we can help. Whatever their age, we have information for children and young people with migraine. We can tell them about migraine, how they could talk to other people about it, and what can help. Click here for our children and young people’s section.

Remember

You are not alone. Lots of people have migraine and they have brothers and sisters like you who care and want to help.
