The Migraine Trust awarded The Helplines NI Brendan Bonner Award for Innovation

We are delighted to share that our Information and Support Services Team has been awarded The Helplines NI Brendan Bonner Award for Innovation. This award has been presented in recognition of the successful development and implementation of our chatbot service.

17th June 2026

As part of our continued commitment to offer a wide range of support services to our community we developed and implemented a chatbot to complement and enhance our existing support services, including our helpline, online form, email and LiveChat services.

The aim of the chatbot is to make it easier and quicker to access our evidencebased, researchbacked information, drawn from our trusted website content and resources.  It has strengthened our service offering by bridging a key gap in support provision – enabling people to safely access information and guidance outside of operating hours and during periods when advisors are supporting other enquiries.

Key Achievements to Date:

  • We have seen an increase in people accessing our information and services outside of opening hours; often late at night when seeking guidance and reassurance during active migraine attacks.
  • Chatbot users have been able to access immediate support during periods when advisors are supporting other service users.
  • We have received multiple examples of positive feedback from individuals who find person-to-person communication challenging and who have therefore been better able to access support through the chatbot. This includes individual for whom English is not their first language who were able to ask questions in their own language and receive translated responses, as well as a member of our community with additional learning needs who reported feeling more comfortable accessing support in this way.

“We are delighted to have received The Helplines NI Brendan Bonner Award for Innovation for this service, which adds to our existing suite of support services, providing people with migraine with another option to access our key information and resources in a more streamlined way.”
