How new accessibility features help me game as I live with migraine

The first and only video game that legitimately helped me with my migraine is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Unlike Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was actually designed for players with disabilities, including those with migraine.

How it helped me

The first thing I did when I booted up Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was to access the accessibility options to completely eliminate the dreaded motion blur.

There is a wide range of accessibility options to choose from, including motion sickness. The accursed motion blur falls under the category of motion sickness. The motion blur option allows me to increase or decrease the level of motion blur using the toggle. It’s a godsend and thanks to that option, I don’t need to worry about getting a migraine.

There is also an option to toggle the camera shaking on and off. I’m relieved to say Insomniac Games definitely passed with flying colours in the accessibility department.

Difficulties using games

On the other hand, Spyro Reignited Trilogy… not so much.

In fact, Spyro Reignited Trilogy literally did my head in. It did a number on my head.

I don’t know where Toys For Bob and Activision’s priorities are at, half of the time. I think their priorities automatically went out of the window.

Please don’t get me started on my harrowing experience with Spyro Reignited Trilogy. While I was battling against Gulp (who is the second boss in Spyro 2: Gateway To Glimmer) in the Gulp’s Outlook arena within the Autumn Plains homeworld, the motion blur coupled with the vomit-inducing camera made things a lot harder for me while I tried to avoid his attacks.

When I finally defeated him after countless tries, I suddenly had a head-splitting headache.

Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into hours as I felt sick during the night and I felt the urge to throw up.

It’s the worst migraine I ever experienced in such a very long time.

As a result, I sold off the game along with its physical pre-order bonuses. This is coming from a long-time Spyro fan and a life-long platformer fanatic, mind yo
In conclusion, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is the epitome of, “Be careful what you wish for”.

I wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone, especially to people with migraine.

Insomniac Games is already setting an example with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in terms of how a game should cater to everyone.
